Dance Mat Challenge

On 17 Dec 2009 St. Bernard's held a Dance Mat Challenge with the help of the Park Leisure Centre. Every pupil in the school and all staff were invited to take part in the challenge to raise money for our PE Buddy Scheme. Challenges continued through out the day, lots of pupils took part or watched and raised a whopping £579.59. The winners of each year group received a free Dance Mat Party for 20 from the Park Leisure Centre and the overall winner James Taylor received free 6 month membership to Club Max! Miss Bell won the Staff competition though she was done out of her glory by Mr Tumelty taking the prize just for fun, with help from Ian Jones from PLC. It was, indeed a fix! We all had a fantastic day and a big THANK YOU to everybody for their hard work. Here are our winners.

Top Up Swimming 2009 Project

The aim of the Top Up Swimming 2009 project was to get children to pass the National Curriculum Water Skills Course. Six pupils in Year 7 at St. Bernards attended The Park Leisure Centre over a period of 2 weeks in November, they where to receive intensive swimming tuition from Level 1 Swimming Coach Vicki Thompson.

The children involved were Abbie, Stacy, Demi, Sophie, Aimee and Ryan. Prior to the course most of these children were not able to swim 25m with confidence, below are some quotes from some of the children about how they felt about swimming before the project:

    * 'I did not like it because I could not swim'
    * 'I didn't like it because I thought I couldn't swim'
    * 'I thought it was hard'

But after they had all taken part in the Top Up Swimming Project they had a totally different opinion on swimming:

    * 'I can swim in the deep end now!'
    * 'I'm more independent about it (swimming) now'
    * I feel more confident at swimming'

This project could not of happened without the help of three experienced swimmers, who attended with the children and helped by swimming beside them in the pool. The Swim Buddies were Sophie Ellwood, Vicky Edgar and Tom Clements. The children will receive their certificates in the Lower School assembly on Monday 14th December.

Indoor Athletics

Hot on the heels of the Key Stage 2 Cross Country came the Indoor Athletics Competition at St.Bernard's on 22 October 09.
Perhaps it was a little too soon after that event and sadly only 2 schools were able to enter. Thanks go to St.Columba and
Holy Family for making the effort.

Sports Ambassador Carl Edmonds was in attendance again with 12 other sports volunteers from Year 10 & 11, thanks to them
for their help running the events so efficiently.

Holy Family won the event and will be asked to represent the St.Bernard's Cluster at the Partnership Indoor Athletics on
Sunday 15 November at DASH Sports Hall at Dowdales School Dalton at 10.45am til 1pm

Key Stage 2 Cross Country.

On Thurdays 15 October 150 children from our Cluster schools attended St.Bernard's to take part in the annual Cross Country race. It was a fine evening again and the children had fun taking part with the help and guidance of Sports Ambassador Carl and a team of Year 10 Sport Leaders. Holy Family swept the board again in the team competition winning girls and boys races in Y3&4 and the boys race in Y5&6. Sacred Heart won the girls team race in Y5&6.

Well done to all the individual winners, some of whom were on the score sheet last year!

Key Stage 1 Run for Fun at St.Columba

Every school in the St.Bernard's Cluster was represented at the KS1 Fun Run on 24 September on a dry and calm, Thursday afternoon. Over 40 children took part in a 10 minute jog, run or walk around a butterfly shaped course.

St.Bernard's Sports Ambassador Carl Edmonds and two Y10 volunteers Adele Bassett and Tom Clements also attended with SSCo Mrs Whillance. Our thanks to Mr O'Flynn at St.Columba for organising the event after a busy week at school. Everyone enjoyed refreshments provided by Tesco and left with the promise of a certificate upon their return to their own school next week.

Welcome to  St. Bernard's Cluster pages.

There are a number of changes to the staffing in the cluster. We say a temporary goodbye to Ms Naomi Slater (nee Yeates) from Sacred Heart who has left to have her baby very soon in Dubai. Our prayers and best wishes go to Mrs Slater and her husband for the safe arrival of their first baby.

Replacing Mrs Slater we welcome Ms Jeni Donachie and hope that she enjoys working in the team. We also welcome Ms Sarah Phizacklea from Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary School in Dalton who takes over the role from Mrs Ormondroyd.

A belated welcome also to Mr Matthew Marshall who has taken over as the Primary Link Teacher at St.Pius X at Easter 2009.

Welcome back to our other experienced and highly dedictated Primary Link Teachers: Mr O'Flynn at St.Columba, Mrs Sadler at Holy Family and Mrs Humphreys at St.Mary's in Ulverston.

All these teachers work tirelessly to enable and enhance the sport and physical activty which happens at with the St.Bernard's Cluster.

This year we have an action packed programme of events and activities for children in our Primary schools and in the St.Bernard's school. for details of the calendar please see the link to the left  of this page.

In St.Bernard's we welcome all our new Year 7 children and hope they will be very happy here and that they will continue to be active and enthusiatic about sport throughout their 5 years with us.

Sports Leadership:

Our Sports Ambassadors Charlotte & Carl have begun working to help younger children access a range of sporting opportunities here in school and they will be busy heading up the Leadership Academy. After a very successful recruitment drive at the end of last term we have lots of keen new  Sports Leaders in Year 10. Some of those have already registered with Youth Sport Trusts Step Into Sport Programme and so will receive lots of goodies and training too as rewards for their commitment to sports leadership at St.Bernard's.

Congratulations to Charlotte who has already notched up a wapping 100 hours of Step into Sport volunteering over the last year and has been presented with her rewards from both the Partnership and Youth Sport Trust.

Charlotte will be attending a Sports Ambassador Conference on 6 October at Manchester United FC where she will learn more about her role and report back to the rest of the Sports Ambassadors in the Partnership.
