UVHS Cluster Activities 2010

Festivals:
Since January, the following have been offered:
Y4 Quicksticks
High 5
Key Steps 1,2 and 3 Gymnastics (Y1-7)
Y1/2/3 Fun Runs
Y1/2/3 Multi Skills
Y3/4 Mini red Tennis.
Y6 G & T
Some of these culminated in a Partnership final, and some pupils represented Furness at the recent Schoolympics in Penrith.

Primary School Dance Platform
UVHS dance teachers and 6th form students worked with 6 primary schools at KS2 to produce a dance to perform at the Dance Platform at UVHS in March. All in all, 180 young people participated, and it was watched by over 300 parents and friends.
In addition, UVHS were represented by KS3/4/5 students at the Brewery Dance Platform, there were many favourable comments made about our students.
Now exams have finished, A2 students are leading a dance residency for 2 days at Low Furness.

Girls Try New Events
Girls from all secondary schools in the partnership had the opportunity to try new activities, every Thursday for 6 weeks; activities included fitness work at DW in Barrow and G & T sessions with local providers at UVHS.

Leadership News
The UVHS Sports Council is now up and running, they hope to meet regularly to discuss issues pertinent to PE and sport at the school.
Y10 GCSE students have had the opportunity to complete either a Young Netball or Rugby Leaders award, they will be able to put these to good use next year. Clare Evans once again trained up 12 Young Orienteer Leaders, who in turn delivered sessions and ran competitions in the primary schools.
Jemma Bell ‘swept the board’ by winning every county-wide leadership/volunteering award on offer this year. Our congratulations go out to Jemma; UVHS and the Partnership will miss her next year—our loss, uni’s gain!!

Competitions
Since January, UVHS students have participated in the usual football, rugby, netball and hockey competitions; there have also been opportunities for basketball, girls football, 6th form netball and Y8 sports hall athletics.
The Y8 /U16 hockey teams were crowned Barrow Schools Hockey Champions, and in the sports hall athletics, we were overall 2nd in both boys and girls competitions.
5 of our athletes were selected to compete in the National X-C Championships in January; in May 23 athletes were selected for the County and a handful made it to the Inter Counties Competition in June, Freya Sadler in Y8 was our most successful athlete, missing national qualifying time in 200m by 0.2 seconds—a huge achievement, nevertheless.

External Funding
This has enabled us to purchase harnesses and helmets for climbing, thus making the activity inclusive; in addition, Y7/8 students have had the opportunity to utilise the skills of the Pro at Ulverston Golf Club.

Sports Round-up
• All Y10 students took part in a 6 week unit of work at the Leisure Centre, run by Centre staff. Everyone enjoyed themselves, including Mrs Hayton and Mrs Jackson
• Kieran Marshall came into school to deliver rugby to Y7/8 girls, and all had the chance to experience contact rugby
• Stefan Jones ahs been delivering tennis sessions to 16 Y7/8 students on Thursday evenings
• Leisure Centre staff delivered lunch-time sessions to G & T Y9, through cardio-tennis
• Clare Evans took a group of 20 students, staff and parents on a 3 week orienteering, sightseeing and adventure trip; apart from the problem with the ash cloud, a great time was had by one and all.
